Microneedling for All Skin Tones: What to Expect, Who It's For and How We Do It Differently

If you’ve been searching for microneedling near Normandy Park, Burien or anywhere in South King County, you’ve probably found a list of options and not much clarity on what actually separates one clinic from another. We're here to give you the honest picture: what microneedling is, what it does, who it’s safe for (including darker skin tones) and what you should ask before booking anywhere.
What Is Microneedling and How Does It Work?
Microneedling is a medical-grade skin treatment that uses fine, controlled needles to create tiny channels in the skin’s surface. This triggers your skin’s natural healing response, producing new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of smooth, firm, even-toned skin.
The result over a series of treatments is skin that looks and feels more like itself: better texture, reduced scarring, more even tone and a natural glow. It’s not a quick fix and it’s not a miracle. It’s a clinical process that compounds over time to give you beautiful results when done correctly.
At Inclusive Aesthetics, we use the SkinPen, a FDA-cleared microneedling device. Every treatment is performed by Grace Grymes Chapman, DNP or a trained member of our clinical team.
Is Microneedling Safe for Dark Skin Tones?
This is one of the most important questions to ask and one that many clinics skip past. Yes, microneedling is safe for darker skin tones, but only when performed correctly with appropriate protocols.
Unlike laser treatments, microneedling doesn’t use heat or light energy, which means it carries a much lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) - the darkening or discoloration that can occur when melanin-rich skin is treated aggressively. This makes microneedling one of the most accessible and effective treatments for people with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V and VI.
That said, the aftercare matters. The products used during and after treatment, sun protection guidance and follow-up protocols all need to be calibrated for your skin. At Inclusive Aesthetics, every treatment plan is customized. We don’t use a one-size-fits-all protocol for any skin type.

What Conditions Does Microneedling Treat?
Microneedling is most commonly used to address:
• Acne scars and post-acne marks
• Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
• Fine lines and early skin laxity
• Melasma and hyperpigmentation (in combination with appropriate protocols)
• Dull or tired-looking skin
• Stretch marks (body microneedling)
It’s particularly effective for acne scarring on darker skin tones, where many other treatments carry too high a risk of further discoloration. For clients in South King County who have been told they aren’t candidates for other skin treatments, microneedling at Inclusive Aesthetics is often a safe and effective alternative.
What Does a Microneedling Treatment Feel Like?
Most clients describe it as mild pressure and a light scratching sensation; not painful. We apply a topical numbing cream before every treatment so you’re comfortable throughout. The treatment itself takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area being treated.
Afterward, your skin will look flushed or mildly pink, similar to a moderate sunburn. This typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. You’ll be given specific aftercare instructions including what to avoid (direct sun, active skincare ingredients, sweating) for the first few days.
How Many Treatments Do You Need?
Most clients see their best results after a series of 3 to 6 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. This allows the collagen remodeling process to build on itself with each session.
For acne scarring specifically, we often recommend starting with a series of 4 treatments and reassessing. Deeper or older scars may benefit from more sessions. Grace will give you a realistic expectation at your consultation; not a number designed to maximize your spend, but an honest assessment of what your skin needs.
