Lasers and Skin of Color: Separating the Myths from the Medicine

There's a version of the conversation about lasers and skin of color that goes like this: lasers aren't for dark skin, they're too risky, stick to topicals. That version is outdated, and for a lot of people it's meant years of avoiding treatments that could have genuinely helped them.

The more complete version is this: some lasers aren't appropriate for darker skin tones, and some providers aren't trained to treat them. That's a very different statement. The treatment modality isn't the problem. The application is.


This post is for anyone with a deeper skin tone who has questions about whether laser treatments are right for them, for dark spots, melasma, redness, texture or hair removal. Here we're going deeper on the specific concerns and myths that come up most often for people with melanin-rich skin.


Myth: Lasers always cause hyperpigmentation on dark skin

This one has roots in reality. Lasers that aren't appropriate for darker skin tones or that are used with incorrect settings can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a darkening of the skin that happens as a response to heat or injury. For people already dealing with hyperpigmentation concerns, the idea of a treatment that might make things worse is understandably alarming.


What's true though, is that the risk of PIH is higher in melanin-rich skin when laser treatments aren't planned and delivered correctly. Correctly planned treatments using appropriate wavelengths, conservative energy levels, pigment-safe prep and careful aftercare have a strong safety record across Fitzpatrick IV, V and VI skin types.

The key words are "correctly planned." This requires clinical judgment, not just a laser device.


Myth: All lasers are the same

They're not, and this distinction matters a lot for skin of color. Different lasers use different wavelengths, and wavelength determines how deep the energy penetrates and which targets it's absorbed by. Shorter wavelengths have higher absorption in melanin which is why they carry more risk on darker skin. Longer wavelengths penetrate deeper with less surface interaction, making them significantly safer for melanin-rich skin when treating both hair and pigment concerns.

  • Renew is the most advanced setting, used for wrinkles, scars and more significant rejuvenation, with collagen remodeling as the presumed mechanism of action.


Downtime is not the same across all three, and that is worth saying plainly. The lightest setting is built for very little recovery. The deeper settings ask more of your skin and more of your aftercare. Which one makes sense depends on your skin, your pigmentation history and honestly what your schedule can absorb.


Myth: Dark spots and melasma can't be treated with lasers on darker skin

This one is more nuanced. Melasma in particular is notoriously tricky to treat on any skin tone, and on deeper complexions it requires an especially conservative approach. Aggressive laser treatments on active melasma can worsen it. But conservative, carefully planned treatments, with appropriate wavelengths, low energy settings and pigment-safe pre-treatment protocols, can reduce the appearance of melasma and dark spots over a series of sessions.


The realistic expectation is gradual improvement, not a single dramatic result. Treatment plans for pigmentation on deeper skin tones are built around protecting the skin's long-term health while making incremental progress. That takes more time than some people want to hear, but it's the approach that actually works without making things worse.

Sun damage, post-acne marks and uneven tone respond well to laser treatment when the protocol is right. These are among the most common concerns we treat at Inclusive Aesthetics.


What a safe consultation should include

A thorough consultation before any laser treatment is non-negotiable. At Inclusive Aesthetics, every laser consultation includes a review of your skin tone using the Fitzpatrick scale, a discussion of your specific concerns, goals and timeline, your history with any previous laser or light treatments, your current skincare routine and any products that might affect treatment safety, and a patch test recommendation when appropriate.

You should leave a consultation with a clear picture of what we're recommending and why — not a sales pitch and booking pressure.


What about redness and visible vessels?

Redness and visible capillaries are actually one of the more straightforward concerns to treat with laser across all skin tones. Results can be quite significant, and it's often a good starting point for clients who've been hesitant about laser treatments generally.


The role of aftercare

Safe laser treatment doesn't end when you leave our clinic. Pigment-safe aftercare is part of the protocol not an afterthought. For melanin-rich skin this typically includes specific instructions around sun avoidance and SPF use, products to calm and support barrier function after treatment, what to watch for in terms of normal vs. concerning responses and when to contact us if something doesn't look right.


We send every client home with written aftercare instructions and product guidance. Your skin's response in the days after treatment is part of the process and we want you to understand what you're seeing.


The bottom line

Lasers and skin of color are not incompatible. They require more careful planning, more conservative settings, more attention to wavelength selection and more thorough aftercare but the outcomes are real and the treatments are safe when done right.
